You asked, we answered

Every month, the City of Vaughan highlights the commonly asked questions received by the public and responded to by Service Vaughan in a series called ‘You asked, we answered.’

Here are the top five inquiries from February:

1. How can I exchange my broken or damaged City-branded green bins or kitchen containers?

If your City-issued green bin or kitchen container is broken or damaged, you can sign up online through Service Vaughan to exchange it for a new one, free of charge. The City’s logo must be on the bin to be eligible for a free exchange.

The City no longer sells new or exchanges broken or damaged City-issued blue boxes. Blue boxes are available for purchase through Miller Waste Systems. You can contact them at area10@millerwaste.ca

2. When are my 2026 interim residential property tax payments due?

The City’s 2026 interim residential and non-residential property tax bills were mailed to all Vaughan property owners in February. Payment due dates are as follows:

  • First instalment – Friday, March 27
  • Second instalment – Tuesday, April 28
  • Third instalment – Wednesday, May 27

If you did not receive your tax bill in the mail, contact the City immediately by phone at 905-832-2281 or by email at service@vaughan.ca. Failure to receive a tax bill does not exempt you from paying property taxes – late payment penalties will be added

3. How do I get a marriage licence?

To apply for a marriage licence, you must first complete and submit your application online through the City’s system, where you can also upload your identification documents. After submitting the application, book an appointment using the online booking tool to schedule a convenient time to finalize the process. On your scheduled date, visit Vaughan City Hall (2141 Major Mackenzie Dr.) to pay the required fee and pick up your marriage licence.

At least one applicant must appear in person to obtain the licence. Marriage licences are issued by appointment only between 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Please note that photocopies and digital copies of documentation are not accepted.

Licences are valid for 90 days from the date of issue and allow your marriage to be performed anywhere in Ontario by an appointed municipal clerk or delegate, a judge or justice of the peace, a member of Provincial Parliament, a person who belongs to and is duly recognized as entitled to perform marriages by a band, First Nation, Métis or Inuit organization or community or Indigenous entity located in whole or in part in Ontario, or a religious official authorized to perform religious marriages in Ontario.

More information about marriage licences, civil marriage ceremonies, vow renewal services, bookings and requirements is available on the City’s marriage services webpage

4. How do I appeal a parking or by-law penalty issued by the City?

Penalty notices are issued for violations of City by-laws, including the Parking By-law (PDF). Within the prescribed timelines, recipients must either pay or appeal the penalty by requesting a review by a Screening Officer.

Requests for Screening Officer review of a penalty must be received no later than 15 days from the date the penalty notice was served. Recipients can complete an online appeal at vaughan.ca/PenaltyAppeals or request a telephone appointment to speak to a Screening Officer by calling the City at 905-832-2281 or emailing bylaw@vaughan.ca.

If you are not the registered vehicle owner or the contravener named on the penalty notice, you will need to submit a completed Agent Authorization Form (PDF) to appeal on the owner’s behalf.

If you are not satisfied with the decision of the Screening Officer, you may request a Hearing Review. A request must be made within 15 days following the receipt of the Screening Officer’s decision.

5. How do I register for spring recreation programs and summer camps?

Then head over to vaughan.perfectmind.com to secure your spot!
