Micro-Surfacing Pavement Preservation Program

As part of the City of Vaughan’s commitment to road maintenance and preservation, we are implementing a micro-surfacing program on select roads across Vaughan.

What is micro-surfacing?

Micro-surfacing is a cost-effective road preservation method that involves applying a blend of emulsified asphalt, aggregate, water and additives to existing pavement.

Benefits of micro-surfacing include:

  • sealing cracks and protecting the road base from moisture, helping prevent damage caused by freeze-thaw cycles.
  • improving surface texture and providing traction and skid resistance.
  • enhancing the road’s appearance.
  • extending the road’s lifespan.

Starting in July through to October 2026 to 2027, the City’s contractor, Miller Group Inc., will be undertaking micro-surfacing work on the following streets in Vaughan:

  • Ravendale Gate
  • Ravendale Court
  • Briarose Avenue
  • Theresa Circle
  • Stephanie Boulevard
  • Rachelle Court
  • Dean Place
  • Paula Court

The work takes one day to complete and begins at 7 a.m., with completion by 7 p.m.

What you need to know

  • If your street is selected for micro-surfacing, you will be notified two to four weeks in advance via a door hanger.
  • Micro-surfacing work takes place during the week, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Temporary lane closures are required to safely complete this work.
  • Driveway access may be blocked for a short duration (two to four hours) while the surface area cures.
  • Garbage collection and school bus pick-up/drop-off will continue as usual.
  • Material placed may appear to be reddish in colour upon initial placement; however, it will turn black within an hour as the material begins to cure.
  • Although micro-surfacing aesthetically enhances the road pavement, it is not intended to resolve any existing potholes, deep cracking or alligator cracks. It is intended to extend the life of the road by adding a sealed layer. There may be some material that is placed against concrete curb, altering the colour. The City accepts this as an aesthetic impact of the work and will not be pressure washing curbs that may be impacted.

Should your street be undergoing micro-surfacing, you are asked to:

  • plan accordingly and make necessary arrangements to move your vehicles as necessary.
  • park on nearby streets until work is completed and signs are removed.
  • remove all vehicles, bins and other items from the street by 7 a.m. on your scheduled treatment day.

To ensure the safe completion of this work, please:

  • Exercise caution around active construction areas. Newly applied micro-surfacing material will be hot and tacky, and should not be walked on until it has fully cured. Children and pets should be kept at a safe distance from work zones at all times.
  • Obey all posted signage and instructions from flagging personnel. Do not attempt to move or drive through traffic barrels or barricades, as doing so may damage the surface and result in asphalt being tracked onto adjacent driveways or sidewalks.
  • Do not attempt to engage field crews during the operation of construction equipment or machinery. Look for the City representative on site.
  • Wait until the road has officially reopened before walking, biking or driving through treated areas.

Your co-operation is appreciated in helping us achieve the best possible outcome for this road improvement project.

After the work

  • Some loose aggregate or fines may remain on the surface for a few weeks after the work is completed. This is normal and will dissipate with regular traffic and street-sweeping operations.
  • Avoid sharp turns, dry steering and sudden stops on the newly laid surface to prevent damage.
  • Freshly laid material may be tacky and leave temporary marks on driveways, especially if driven over before curing.
