Vaughan community comes together to honour the victims in Iran with a vigil and gathering
On Feb. 21, the community joined Mayor Steven Del Duca and Members of Council to honour the victims in Iran with a vigil and gathering at Vaughan City Hall.
Community members brought flowers and tealight candles in memory of the lives lost, and are encouraged to do so until Tuesday, Feb. 24.
“It was a truly sombre day as we laid flowers in the Courtyard of Vaughan City Hall in memory of the Iranians who have lost their lives during the mass murders in their homeland,” said Mayor Steven Del Duca. “The events unfolding overseas weigh heavily on my heart. Everyone deserves safety, dignity and the fundamental human rights that allow them to live freely and without fear. Thank you to everyone who joined us for our vigil. The outpouring of love and support I have seen for one another is truly special. Vaughan continues to stand in solidarity with Iranians in hopes of seeing a democratic and free future for all.”
On Jan. 29, the City of Vaughan raised the Iranian Lion and Sun flag outside Vaughan City Hall in solidarity with the Iranian community. On Feb. 14, Mayor Steven Del Duca was the only Mayor to walk in the Global Day of Action in Toronto with the Iranian-Canadian community.
