Come celebrate National Public Works Week!
Join us for fun, free family-friendly activities at the Joint Operations Centre on May 24
To recognize the City of Vaughan’s 450 dedicated Public Works professionals, we’re inviting you to join us in celebrating National Public Works Week from Sunday, May 18 to Saturday, May 24.
Join us – rain or shine – on Saturday, May 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a day of free, family-friendly activities at the Joint Operations Centre (2800 Rutherford Rd.).
During the open house, you can:
meet our Public Works teams
check out some of the City’s fleet vehicles, like snowplows, streetsweepers and a shredder truck
pick up FREE mulch (up to three bags per vehicle for Vaughan residents; bags will be prefilled and provided by the City)
bring used clothing for the Cornerstone donation bin
get your face painted for FREE
step right up for carnival games
enjoy live entertainment
participate in giveaways and more!
If you cannot attend the event, there will be an additional mulch giveaway at the Joint Operations Centre on Friday, May 23 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
To kick off the week-long celebrations, the City will raise the National Public Works Week flag and illuminate Vaughan City Hall orange on Tuesday, May 20.
The City’s Public Works team has three departments. The Environmental Services team manages garbage, recycling, organics, leaf and yard waste collection, and water distribution, wastewater collection and stormwater management services. The Transportation and Fleet Management Services team manages all City vehicles, equipment and traffic services, maintains municipal roads, sidewalks and pathways, and administers the school crossing guard program. The Parks, Forestry and Horticulture Operations team provides forestry and horticulture services, maintains parks, boulevards and open spaces. All three teams work together to provide essential City services year-round, including winter maintenance.
Since 1960, the third week in May has been celebrated as National Public Works Week in Canada. Municipalities across the country use this week to educate, engage and inform the public about the essential role public works professionals play in the quality of life in their community.
