Winter will be here before you know it, and with it comes the possibility of more watermain breaks. Here’s what you need to know about watermain breaks, what to do if you see one and the steps the City of Vaughan takes to prevent them.

What are watermains?

Don’t let the beautiful weather this week fool you … winter is coming! The good news is, Vaughan is ‘snow’ prepared! The City of Vaughan provides citizens with efficient, reliable and high-level winter services – whether it’s addressing ice on roads or clearing snow from local streets, paths and sidewalks, the City’s crews strive to ensure everyone can travel safely regardless of the weather. 

Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua issued the following statement to commemorate Remembrance Day: 

There is no shortage of leaves in Vaughan! Due to high volumes of leaf and yard waste, some collection routes in Vaughan may not be completed on your scheduled day this week.

You may think there are many household substances and items that can be flushed down the toilet. But in fact, the City of Vaughan’s sanitary sewer system is not designed to dispose of anything beyond human waste, toilet paper and wastewater. Flushing any other materials down the drains at home can cause damage or plumbing blockages and increase operation and maintenance costs to clean and repair.

As the winter season approaches, it’s a good time to think about your snow removal options. Each year, the City of Vaughan operates an extensive winter services and road maintenance program to help keep the public safe during the winter months. Some residents may require assistance with snow-clearing at their homes – that’s where the Community & Home Assistance to Seniors (CHATS) program comes in, and there’s still time to apply!
