A community green space preserving natural lands and honouring Indigenous history

Yesterday, Mayor Steven Del Duca and Members of Council announced a new community green space coming to the Ward 3 community, to honour the deep and enduring Indigenous presence in Vaughan, protect lands they have long called home and provide a new space for residents of all ages to enjoy.

The community green space will be located in the Teston Road and Pine Valley Road area and is envisioned as a welcoming, green space featuring natural landscaping, open areas, walking pathways and trail connections. The design prioritizes environmental stewardship and accessibility, allowing part of the space to remain largely untouched while supporting meaningful outdoor experiences for all.

Recently designated for public use by the City, these lands are being protected to preserve their natural character while offering residents a place to connect with nature and gather as a community for generations to come. The City recognizes the importance of these lands to Indigenous peoples, including the Wendat Nation, past and present, and is committed to preserving them in a way that reflects shared values of respect, recognition and reconciliation.

A dedicated play area is planned adjacent to the community green space and will include junior and senior playgrounds, complemented by a shade structure to support year‑round use and comfort. The play area is seamlessly integrated with the adjacent woodlot, forming part of a broader, connected park and open space network that enhances recreational opportunities, promotes active living, and strengthens ecological and pedestrian connectivity for the Vaughan community.

QUOTES

“I am thrilled to announce a new community green space coming soon to Ward 3. Long before Vaughan became the city we know today, this land was cared for and sustained by Indigenous communities. This new community green space will provide an opportunity for us to acknowledge that history, to show our continued respect and gratitude, and to reflect on our shared responsibility to care for the environment. I want to recognize and thank the Wendat Nation for working with the City to help preserve and protect their heritage for future for generations to come. I want to also thank Ward 3 Councillor Rosanna DeFrancesca for supporting this initiative and the City staff across many departments for their thoughtful work and collaboration. I look forward to this park becoming a place where people can gather, have fun and deepen their understanding of the Indigenous communities, which remain a meaningful part of Vaughan’s story.”

- Mayor Steven Del Duca

“It gives me great pleasure that we are bringing a new space to play and connect with nature to the Ward 3 community. This community green space will be more than just a park. It will be a place for learning, reflection and connection that residents and visitors of all ages can enjoy. I want to thank the Wendat Nation and City staff for working together to get this project off the ground. I also want to thank Mayor Steven Del Duca for his continued leadership with this initiative. Once built, I know this space will become a neighbourhood favourite for generations to come.”

- Ward 3 Councillor Rosanna DeFrancesca

Rooted in the teachings passed down from our ancestors, the Wendat Nation approaches the land as a shared responsibility. This place forms part of a living ancestral landscape that holds enduring cultural, spiritual and historical significance for the Wendat Nation and for other Indigenous peoples. It embodies knowledge transmitted through time —teachings that continue to guide us in living with respect, balance and responsibility. Guided by our long‑standing diplomatic traditions, we welcome the City of Vaughan’s commitment to protecting these lands that were once home to the Wendat Nation and to many Indigenous communities. Its recognition of the Wendat Nation as a key partner in this work reflects a shared responsibility to ensure this place remains free from development, as well as a place of learning, connection, and reflection for several generations to come.”

- Grand Chief Pierre Picard of the Wendat Nation
