The annual National Public Works Week Open House returns on May 23
On the lookout for a family-friendly weekend activity? You’re in luck – the City of Vaughan’s annual National Public Works Week Open House returns on Saturday, May 23! Join us at the Joint Operations Centre (2800 Rutherford Rd.) between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to celebrate Vaughan’s Public Works professionals with a day of fun for the whole family.
During the Open House, you can:
meet our Public Works teams.
check out some of the City’s fleet vehicles, like snowplows, streetsweepers and a shredder truck.
pick up three FREE mulch bags per vehicle (for Vaughan residents).
purchase or exchange City-issued green bins, kitchen containers and composters (credit or debit only).
dig in to $2 ice cream cones and FREE pizza (one slice per person, while quantities last).
step right up for carnival games.
enjoy live entertainment.
participate in giveaways and more!
Can’t make the Open House but want free mulch? No problem – there will be an alternative mulch pick-up day (for Vaughan residents) at the Joint Operations Centre on Friday, May 22 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
National Public Works Week takes place this year from Sunday, May 17 to Saturday, May 23. Throughout this week, the City recognizes our team of 450 dedicated staff who work year-round to keep our community safe, clean and beautiful.
This year’s theme, “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community,” highlights the visible and invisible roles public works professionals play in keeping Vaughan moving. You may notice road repairs, new sidewalks or upgrades to public spaces, but just as important is the work happening quietly underground and overnight, from maintaining water pipes and managing wastewater services to ensuring safe and reliable infrastructure.
To kick off the week-long celebrations, the City will raise the National Public Works Week flag at Vaughan City Hall (2141 Major Mackenzie Dr.) and the Joint Operations Centre, and illuminate Vaughan City Hall orange on Tuesday, May 19.
Since 1960, the third week in May has been celebrated as National Public Works Week in Canada. Municipalities across the country use this week to educate, engage and inform the public about the essential role public works professionals play in the quality of life in their community.
