Sewer Backup

What is a sewer backup?

A sewage blockage can create a backup on private property. It is the result of wastewater no longer able to leave the property through the sanitary lateral pipe that is connected to the City of Vaughan sewer, usually due to a blockage. This results in wastewater backing up into your property.

Stormwater Management Ponds

About stormwater management ponds

After rain or snowfall, the water left behind on roads, sidewalks, grass and pathways is called “stormwater.” In natural areas, this water is ordinarily absorbed into the ground by plants and soil. However, pavement and other hard surfaces – such as driveways, sidewalks and roofs – prevent this absorption, leading to water pooling or flooding.

Sewers and catch basins

There are two different sewer systems in Vaughan:

  1. Sanitary sewers collect wastewater that leaves homes or buildings through a drain, such as toilets, sinks, washers or showers and help move it to the wastewater treatment facilities in Durham Region and Peel Region. From there, wastewater is treated before it is released into Lake Ontario. Maintenance access holes are the City’s access points to the sanitary sewer system on the road.

Beyond accommodations and attractions, the sector also includes arts, entertainment, transportation providers, retail, food and beverage, personal services, sports providers, cultural industries, etc. The Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries estimated that the Tourism industry accounts for more than 3,500 business employing almost 52,000 people in the City.

Watermain Flushing and Swabbing

To ensure the City of Vaughan continues to provide clean and safe drinking water to residents and businesses, regular maintenance is required. Our water operators routinely perform preventive maintenance on our service lines. This maintenance is called “flushing and swabbing.” Over time, mineral and sediment buildup can discolour water and slow down its flow. Flushing and swabbing the watermains removes natural build-up of scale and sediments from water and assists in improving pressure, flow and potential water quality issues.
