​Elena Gallucci - Ward 2 Civic Hero Award, 2008

In April of 2002, Mrs. Gallucci was diagnosed with leukemia. While fighting this disease, she became involved in fundraising efforts on behalf of Princess Margaret Hospital. While still in hospital, she befriended and supported others who were also suffering from various forms of leukemia.

More than 20 years in the making, and at 900 acres in size, North Maple Regional Park (NMRP) is the most ambitious park development in the City’s history. It will be larger than New York City’s Central Park, and more than twice the size of High Park in Toronto. 

Ellise Gasner - Ward 5 Civic Hero Award, 2008

Feedback collected from the community has been vital to the success and redevelopment of this community centre. Through collaboration with residents and stakeholders, the City developed designs for an innovative, accessible, sustainable and safe building that fosters physical activity, health and wellness for all citizens.

Erika Wilding - Ward 2 Civic Hero Award, 2006

Ms. Wilding, a Ward 2 resident and seniors' group volunteer, was recognized for her commitment to maintaining the beauty of the Woodbridge streetscape and ongoing communication with her local councillor, providing feedback on a variety of issues.

Gaetano Iourio - Ward 1 Civic Hero Award, 2006 ​

In addition to being a Park Ambassador, Mr. Iourio has supported the needs of seniors in Vaughan, met regularly with Members of Council, and promoted environmental stewardship.

About Garnet A. Williams Community Centre

The Garnet A. Williams Community Centre is located at 501 Clark Ave. W. It is a 125,000-square-foot facility, originally constructed between 1982-84. With an indoor arena, leisure pool, fitness centre, gymnasium, community and activity rooms, squash and racquetball courts and office space for City staff, the community centre is a well-known gathering space for residents in the Thornhill community.

Giulia Morra - Ward 1 Civic Hero Award, 2007

The Maple resident and mother of three has been an active volunteer with the York Catholic District School Board, the Maple Santafest Parade, Vaughan in Motion to Cure Cancer, and has assisted the City of Vaughan Parks department on a number of cleanup initiatives in the community. ​
