Vaughan gathers in light and solidarity at Menorah Lighting ceremony

In a show of unity and reflection, residents gathered at Vaughan City Hall on Dec. 17 for the City’s annual Menorah Lighting ceremony, reaffirming the community’s commitment to peace, resilience and standing together in the face of hatred.

The ceremony featured remarks from Mayor Steven Del Duca, a special choir performance and the lighting of the Menorah. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan, founder and spiritual leader of Chabad Flamingo, presided over the ceremony.

“It was an honour to gather with families from across Vaughan to welcome Chanukah through our annual Menorah Lighting ceremony. I want to express my sincerest thanks to Rabbi Mendel Kaplan for presiding over the ceremony and making it truly special,” said Mayor Steven Del Duca.

“At a time when Jewish communities around the world are grieving following the tragic shooting in Australia, and as antisemitism continues to rise at home and abroad, moments like this take on even greater meaning. Chanukah reminds us that light can prevail over darkness, and that strength is found in unity, compassion and standing together. To our Jewish residents – we stand with you, shoulder to shoulder, today and always. On behalf of the City of Vaughan, I want to wish everyone celebrating a safe, peaceful and happy Chanukah. Chag Chanukah Sameach!”

The community is invited to join in another Chanukah celebration tonight, Dec. 18, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Garnet A. Williams Community Centre (501 Clark Ave. W.).

Chanukah is an eight-day holiday, celebrated each year by people of the Jewish faith. It is observed to commemorate the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem.
