The City of Vaughan’s first animal shelter is now open to provide services to the residents of Vaughan, the Town of Bradford, West Gwillimbury and King Township.

“Each year thousands of healthy and well-trained animals end up in local shelters as strays,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “I would like to encourage our residents who are thinking of adopting a dog or cat to visit our new shelter and meet with our staff who will be happy to assist you in finding the right animal.”

The shelter is located at 70 Tigi Court, Unit 47, south of Rutherford Road and east of Creditstone Road. The hours of operation are Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shelter will be closed on Sundays and statutory holidays. The facility deals with dogs and cats only. The shelter can be reached at 905-832-8505.

The shelter will be responsible for enforcing animal-related bylaws, animal control services (picking up stray, sick and injured dogs and cats), licensing of dogs and cats and adoptions.

Amenities in the 6,700-square-foot facility include viewing areas and a gymnasium for exercising the animals during inclement weather.

“We are expanding our services in this area to meet the needs of the community in a cost-effective way,” said City Manager Clayton Harris. “Adoption fees include spaying or neutering, vaccination, micro chipping and a rabies shot.”

Vaughan was approached by Bradford West Gwillimbury and King Township to enter into service contracts for the provision of animal services.  Under the agreement, Vaughan provides animal control and sheltering services on a complete cost-recovery basis.
