Residents and visitors celebrated Canada’s 144th birthday with headline entertainment at the City of Vaughan’s Canada Day celebrations on Friday, July 1 at Mackenzie Glen District Park in Maple.

“The City’s Canada Day celebrations provided an opportunity for residents, families and neighbours to celebrate the spirit of our community,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “The event drew record crowds coming together to show their national and civic pride.”

Presented by TD, the free stage entertainment kicked off with Dia, a rising star from Vaughan, followed by the Official Welcome by the Mayor and Members of Council. Dia also performed the national anthem.

Fresh off the success of his recent album AutomaticLuv and his win at the MuchMusic Video Awards, pop musician Danny Fernandes, who is originally from Vaughan, took the stage at 5 p.m.

Juno-nominated band Stereos headlined the live concert at 6:30 p.m. performing their unique blend of rhythm and blues, punk, pop and hip hop. The Stereos signed autographs for fans following the show.

“Events of this magnitude require months of planning from staff and support from many sponsors,” said City Manager Clayton Harris. “The City is proud of its relationship with our corporate and promotional sponsors who assist us in delivering top-notch entertainment, all free-of-charge to our residents.”

Other activities included a free Tim Hortons Inflatable Zone, barbecue, face painting, arts and crafts, pizza-making workshop, playground, water park and much more. A free VIVA/YRT transit shuttle bus service was provided to residents.

In support of the City of Vaughan’s Active Together Physical Activity Strategy and the CBC’s Live Right Now initiative, volunteers were on hand encouraging residents to pledge their weight loss goals by joining Vaughan’s Canada Day team. More than 2,500 pounds were pledged by event goers. This initiative will help to reach the City’s goal of losing 100,000 pounds collectively, as pledged by Mayor Bevilacqua in June 2011. Residents are encouraged to show their support by making a pledge at LiveRightNow.ca, under the City of Vaughan Active Together group.
