Rain Gardens 101 

The City of Vaughan, in partnership with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, is hosting a workshop focused on rain gardens called Rain Gardens 101. This engaging session will teach residents:

  • how rain gardens work and why they are effective for managing stormwater.
  • the role rain gardens play in reducing flood risk and building climate resilience.
  • key design considerations, including location, sizing and plant selection.
  • practical steps to plan and install a rain garden on their property.

 

Date: Monday, April 13

Location: Garnet A Williams Community Centre (501 Clark Ave. W)

Time: 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Registration is required. Event is free. 

 

2026 World Migratory Bird Day

Join the City and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority to celebrate the journey of migratory birds. The event will feature a trail walk where you’ll learn about the importance of migratory birds, the threats they face and how we can help safeguard their habitats. This family-friendly event will begin with a short introductory talk, followed by a guided trail walk through the beautiful Maple Nature Reserve. You’ll also discover birding tips and find out which bird species you may see or hear in the area

 

Date: Sunday, May 10

Location: Maple Nature Reserve (10401 Dufferin St.)

Time: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Registration is required and will open on April 13. Event is free. 

 

How to prepare?

This is an outdoor event and will be held rain or shine, so please dress for the weather. Wear proper walking shoes and bring a water bottle. You are welcome to bring a lawn chair or blanket for the introductory talk. The City will supply:

  • binoculars (please bring your own if you have, we have limited amount)
  • bird identification materials and checklists
  • clipboards
  • pencils
  • Vaughan Public Libraries will be on site with Birding Canada Backpacks, available to be taken out with a library card. Backpacks include a field guide, set of binoculars, manuals and logs, link to a free online birding course.

     

There are washrooms onsite.

 

Arriving and Parking

Please use the driveway entrance off Dufferin Street, located at 10401 Dufferin St. and follow the road until you reach the parking lot. The event will begin at the field in front of the parking lot and washroom building.
