What is streetscape design?

Streetscape design is the planning and design of the spaces within and alongside streets. This includes elements such as sidewalks, street trees, landscaping, lighting, cycling facilities, street furniture like benches, wayfinding, public art and other features. These elements contribute to the character, comfort and function of a street.

About the update

The City is updating its City-Wide Streetscape Implementation Manual and Financial Strategy, which was completed in 2014.

Streetscapes include features such as sidewalks, trees, lighting, benches and other elements that make streets safe, accessible and welcoming. The updated manual will reflect Vaughan’s Complete Streets Guidelines, current design approaches and today’s construction and maintenance practices.

The project will create updated streetscape standards and a long-term plan to fund future improvements. These standards will guide work across Vaughan, including in growing areas such as the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and Weston 7, heritage districts and established neighbourhoods.

The goal is to create streets that are accessible, sustainable, attractive and affordable to build and maintain.
