Follow the signs to walk, bike or roll to class
Have you mapped out the route to school for the year? It may be easy to hop in the car to take your kids to school, but there are many other ways to get there.
Active modes of transportation – like walking, wheeling with an assistive mobility device, cycling, rollerblading or skateboarding – help foster a healthier lifestyle and get more cars off the roads, which is good for the environment!
Reminder: students using micromobility vehicles, such as e-scooters or e-bikes, must be at least 16 years old and wear a helmet. For more information, visit vaughan.ca/micromobility.
Keeping our community and streets safe and healthy is a shared responsibility, and by choosing active transportation, you can:
build healthy, lifelong habits of activity and independence.
reduce vehicle congestion in school zones.
help reduce pollution and greenhouse gases made by vehicles.
- improve students’ physical and mental health, social development and academic performance.
The City of Vaughan’s Active School Travel program makes it easy to take the first step with wayfinding signage that maps out five-, 10- and 15-minute walking and cycling routes around several schools in Vaughan. For the 2026-27 school year, four new schools have been added to the program:
Discovery Public School (120 Discovery Tr.)
Forest Run Public School (200 Forest Run Blvd.)
St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Elementary School (91 Fiori Dr.)
Thornhill Woods Public School (341 Thornhill Woods Dr.)
Each sign is unique to the nearest school and details how long it will take to bike or walk to the school from that location. These signs also alert drivers to be vigilant and look out for students along popular routes – look out for them while you travel! Installation of signs for the 2026-27 school areas is still ongoing. Since 2022, the program has been implemented at 20 schools across the city.
This program is just one of the many ways the City continues to enhance road safety through the MoveSmart Mobility Management Strategy, which helps form and direct the City’s vision to continue providing a safer, more efficient and sustainable transportation system.
