Crews continue maintenance ahead of winter season

Enjoying the autumn weather at Vaughan’s parks, trails and public spaces? The City of Vaughan’s Public Works crews are hard at work to keep these shared spaces safe, clean and beautiful for everyone throughout the season.

Here’s a snapshot of the services we’re wrapping up before the first snowfall hits:

  • Litter cleanup continues in our parks, paths, trails, sidewalks, boulevards and garden beds across the city. Crews have collected 10,779 bags of litter so far this year.

  • Street sweeping is ongoing across Vaughan with three rotations completed to date. The final rotation will commence on Oct 26 and is expected to be complete by the end of November.

  • Forestry operations are ongoing, with 1,227 pruning requests, 526 removal requests and 1,597 service requests completed so far this year. Regular tree maintenance will pause for the winter and resume in the spring, with hazards addressed in priority sequence.

  • Road maintenance continues, with more than 2,751 potholes repaired this year.

  • Grass cutting across more than 200 parks takes place on a two-week rotation and will be completed by the end of October.

  • Gardens and landscaped areas were transitioned from summer annual displays to vibrant seasonal displays for the fall, including a combination of chrysanthemums and ornamental cabbage, kale and peppers. These assets will be in place until early November.

  • Stormwater management pond maintenance and inspections are nearly complete. Three rounds of litter cleanup and grass cutting across approximately 150 stormwater ponds wrapped up earlier this month, with ongoing maintenance and inspections continuing as required.

  • Seasonal traffic-calming measures, including flex signs and speed cushions, are being temporarily removed to prepare for winter maintenance operations. Some traffic-calming measures will remain installed throughout the winter.

  • Pavement marking is underway, with 690,000 metres refreshed so far this year.

  • Fire hydrant inspections are underway, with 7,822 completed so far this year.

  • Water valve inspections and exercising are ongoing, with 3,020 inspections completed so far this year.

  • Seasonal park amenities will be open until Nov. 15, when they close for the winter. Lit amenities, public bathrooms and parking lot gates will close on Nov. 1. Synthetic soccer fields will remain open until Dec. 1. All seasonal amenities will reopen in the spring.
