Urban Water Plan

Public session at City Hall on Feb. 5

As Vaughan’s communities continue to grow, so does the demand on our water infrastructure. Whether it’s running from the tap, draining into sewers or helping to mitigate flooding – do you know how our water, wastewater and stormwater systems are maintained and managed?

The City of Vaughan is developing an Urban Water Plan to address these needs for current and future generations – and we need your input.

An in-person session is being held for residents to learn more about how we are planning for increased water demands, and how our system of water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure (such as pipes, watermains and drains) will grow. Drop by Vaughan City Hall on Monday, Feb. 5 between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. to speak to the project team, provide input and more.

Can’t attend in person? Material from the session will be available for review online at vaughan.ca/UrbanWaterPlan by Tuesday, Feb. 6. Questions, comments and feedback can be submitted through an online commenting form or via email at urbanwaterplan@vaughan.cauntil Tuesday, Feb. 20.

Input collected throughout the study process will help inform final recommendations.

More about the Urban Water Plan

The City is responsible for managing stormwater systems, local water distribution and pumping, and local wastewater collection and pumping. The City’s water systems include:

  • wastewater collection systems, including sewers, manholes and pumping stations.

  • water distribution systems, including watermains, chambers, valves and booster stations.

  • drainage collection systems, such as storm sewers, manholes and catch basins.

  • stormwater management facilities, such as wet and dry ponds, hybrid wetlands, underground storage tanks, infiltration trenches/galleries and oil and grit separator units.

  • natural heritage features that provide stormwater-related environmental services, such as water quality improvement and water quantity regulation.

The Urban Water Plan will be the City’s long-term strategy for providing water, wastewater and stormwater management systems that are safe and reliable.

As part of the plan, an environmental assessment is taking place – this includes reviewing existing water infrastructure and its challenges, and proposing new strategies and systems for increased usage. Climate change adaptation and flood mitigation initiatives will also be considered.
