Help keep catch basins and fire hydrants clear
Report water ponding and blocked hydrants to us at 905-832-2281
With the recent blast of winter weather, Service Vaughan has received an influx of calls about blocked catch basins and fire hydrants.
We need your help keeping them clear!
Catch basin blockages
When catch basins are covered by snow, ice or debris, there’s nowhere for melting snow or rainwater to drain, which can lead to water ponding and flooding. We need your help preventing this from happening!
The resident living closest to a catch basin is encouraged to help clear it of snow, ice and debris, if it’s safe to do so. When you’re out shovelling, check to see if the catch basin by your home is covered or blocked.
Fire hydrant access
In an emergency, every second matters. Blocked, concealed or difficult-to-access fire hydrants can delay emergency fire response.
Residents who have a fire hydrant on their property or City property adjacent to theirs are responsible for ensuring the hydrant is always visible and unobstructed. Ensure snow, ice and debris are not blocking the area surrounding a hydrant and an accessible path from the street to the hydrant is always maintained.
If you need assistance or see water ponding or flooding on the street near a catch basin, call the City at 905-832-2281 or email service@vaughan.ca.
Slippery sidewalks
Crews have been working around the clock to keep City sidewalks clear, however, they may be slippery due to salt being washed away. Please be cautious when out for a winter walk.
As a friendly reminder – the sidewalks in front of your house and along your property are your responsibility to salt and clear as a homeowner to ensure your neighbours can walk safely on a clear path without fear of slipping on ice or snow.
Please report snow and ice-covered sidewalks to Service Vaughan at 905-832-2281.
Fallen trees and branches
High winds are expected, which may cause trees or large branches to fall and obstruct roads, sidewalks or private property.
If you notice a fallen tree or large branch that is blocking a roadway, sidewalk or creating a safety hazard, please report it immediately to Service Vaughan at 905-832-2281 or email service@vaughan.ca.
Waste tips
You may have more waste than normal this week. As a reminder, waste bins or bags that are buried in snow, on top of or behind snowbanks or covered in snow are not accessible to waste collection crews, and will not be picked up. If there is snow in the forecast the night before your collection day, wait until morning to set out your waste so it doesn’t get covered in snow.
