Council 101: How Vaughan’s local government works

Vaughan residents: here’s what you need to know about your local government and the upcoming municipal election.

 

How Council is structured

Vaughan Council has 10 elected members:

  • One Mayor
  • Four Local and Regional Councillors
  • Five Ward Councillors

 

School Board Trustees are elected separately to represent local education interests.

 

Who represents you

  • Mayor: Leads city-wide priorities and initiatives
  • Local and Regional Councillors: Represent Vaughan at both the city and York Region level
  • Ward Councillors: Represent your local area and bring community issues to Council

 

Vaughan’s five wards:

  • Ward 1 – Maple/Kleinburg
  • Ward 2 – Woodbridge West
  • Ward 3 – Woodbridge/Vellore
  • Ward 4 – Concord/Thornhill North
  • Ward 5 – Thornhill

 

Who can vote

To vote in the municipal election on Monday, Oct. 26, you must be:

  • a Canadian citizen
  • at least 18 years old
  • a resident of Vaughan OR
  • a property owner/tenant in Vaughan (or their spouse)

 

How Vaughan’s government is organized

Vaughan is part of a two-tier system:

 

City of Vaughan (lower-tier) handles:

  • Local roads
  • Fire and rescue
  • Parks and recreation
  • By-law enforcement
  • Waste and green bin collection
  • and more

 

York Region (upper-tier) handles:

  • Policing
  • Public health
  • Transit
  • Major roads
  • and more
