Official Plan Review -- Project Update (December 2008)

This fall we have taken the Vision for the new Official Plan out to the public! The Vaughan Tomorrow: Vision for Transformation is now available online.

Vision for Transformation

Following an extensive public engagement process in the winter and spring of 2008, Vaughan released its Vision for Transformation. The Vision addresses all elements of effective, sustainable and successful city-building such as the design of beautiful places in the city, a range of housing, recreation spaces and how to move around the city by transit and bike.

The Vision for Transformation signals a new era for city-building in Vaughan, one that is inspired by the global movement toward sustainability, placemaking and urbanity. The Vision is just the beginning. Now the City of Vaughan will create an Official Plan to implement the Vision principles that will guide growth in the city over the next thirty years. To embark on this journey, the Vaughan Vision was taken out to the public this fall to get feedback on the Vision that was created.

The following is a list of events that were held around the city. If you missed these events, but would still like to get involved, book a Travelling Roadshow and we will come to your community group and present the Vision.

November 27, 2008: Business and development community

The business and development community came out to an early morning session at the Eagles Nest Golf and Country Club to hear about and discuss the Vision for Transformation. Participants broke out into eight groups and gave their perspective on some of the challenging issues before us including sprawl and reliance on the automobile. Their insight into the business and development industries was valuable and the morning itself was a success with a high turnout of participants and great discussion.

November 29, 2008: All-day Public Workshop at the Kortright Centre

Over 60 residents turned out for an all-day Saturday workshop at Vaughan’s Kortright Centre. The workshop began with a screening of the documentary Voices for Transformation. This was followed by a lively discussion around the Vision principles. Groups discussed a range of topics specific to Vaughan including, the future of the Vaughan Corporate Centre as a downtown, encouraging public transit use and promotion of local agriculture. An inspiring talk by CEO of United Way, Daniele Zanotti had the crowd thinking about the “face of Vaughan,” the social issues that are prevalent and growing in our communities. Finally, an interactive afternoon session using VaughanQuest enabled participants to see how their daily decisions will impact long term growth. It seemed as though the audience was already on board with policies like increasing transit and protecting the countryside. The day ended just before the snow started- thank you to everyone who participated in this exciting session!

Guided Film Screenings

Three libraries in Vaughan held regular screenings of the Voices for Transformation documentary. Thank you to the Bathurst Clark library, Dufferin Clark Library and Maple library for screening the film.

High School Packages

The City of Vaughan has taken the lead in youth engagement, being the first municipality to have a youth councilor and supporting a number of initiatives to help support young leaders of tomorrow. The new Official Plan will guide growth over the next 30 years so input from the youth today is crucial to the success of this plan. In the spring of 2008, classrooms in Vaughan Secondary School, Stephen Lewis Secondary School, Holy Cross Secondary School and St. Elizabeth Catholic High School developed media pieces to communicate issues in their communities.

This fall and winter, an education package that includes a booklet on the Official Plan issues and the documentary is available for teachers who would like to bring real world examples into the classroom.
