What you need to know after last night’s snow!

Catch basin and fire hydrant

After last night’s snowfall, here’s what you can do to help ensure our winter operations run smoothly this weekend:

  • Keep hydrants clear and accessible!

In an emergency, every second matters, and snow-covered hydrants make it difficult for emergency responders to access them. Residents who have a fire hydrant on their property or City property adjacent to theirs are responsible for ensuring it is always visible and unobstructed. Ensure snow, ice and other debris are not blocking the area surrounding a hydrant and an accessible path from the street to the hydrant is always maintained.

  • Consider clearing catch basins to avoid flooding!

Blocked or concealed catch basins can lead to water ponding and street flooding when the snow melts. The resident living closest to a catch basin is encouraged to help clear it of snow, ice and other debris, if it’s safe to do so.

  • Don’t park on the street!

Keep parked cars off the street while snowplows and salting vehicles are out. Make sure your vehicle does not block any part of the sidewalk or walkway or does not hang over the curb – this makes it difficult for crews to clear windrows and sidewalks. On-street parking is not permitted between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. in Vaughan without a permit, under the City’s Parking By-law (PDF) or when snowplows are clearing the streets - even with a permit.

  • Watch out for ice!

The temperature is expected to drop later today. Take extra precautions – roads, sidewalks and other surfaces may freeze. Clear snow and ice from sidewalks bordering your property to help ensure roads and sidewalks remain safe, as stated in the City’s Snow Clearing By-law (PDF).
