Vaughan to offer online summer camps and programs beginning in July

The City of Vaughan’s Recreation Services department is launching the Virtual Summer Adventures series this summer to keep kids active, engaged and entertained. City instructors will livestream popular summer camp activities and recreational programs remotely via Zoom. Pre-registration is required to participate. The classes will run from Monday, July 6 to Friday, Sept. 4, 2020.

The virtual weekly summer camp series will feature daily activities geared toward children aged seven to 14. Daily classes will feature an hour to an hour and a half of programming. Morning and afternoon sessions are available. Choose from creative arts, sports, drama and dance.

Registration is on a weekly basis and a materials and supply list will be emailed to everyone registered in advance of the course start date. Fees start at $75 per week and participants will receive a summer camps drawstring tote, while quantities last, available for curbside pickup at a pre-assigned community centre.

The virtual recreation program offers activities for 45 minutes to one hour each week. There will be up to nine weeks of programming with fees starting at $40 to $120. Programs are available for people of all ages, from preschool to older adults. There are also family lessons for parents and children to participate in programs together. Choose from creative and culinary arts, enrichment, health and wellness and sports.

Registration will start on Monday, June 1 at 8:30 a.m. to help kick off Recreation and Parks Month. To view  the Virtual Summer Adventures program descriptions and times, visit the Registration Portal at vaughan.ca/RecOnline. For more information or to obtain a registration barcode and PIN, please contact Access Vaughan by calling 905-832-2281 or emailing accessvaughan@vaughan.ca.

The new online programming comes in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic as the City continues to monitor and assess the status of on-site summer camps and recreation programs based on public health guidelines. While City facilities remain closed to the public, refunds for current summer camp registration and general summer recreation programs – including swim lessons – will be automatically issued without penalty to the original form of payment used. If paid by debit or cash, a cheque will be sent by mail. Refunds will be processed within three to four weeks.

Recreation Services continues to offer a number of other virtual recreation resources for all ages, abilities and areas of interest. Popular activities include:

  • Vaughan Playschool educational worksheets for children ages three to five in the following subject areas: reading and writing, math and science
  • Easy-to-follow at-home workouts from Vaughan Fitness instructors, featured on Recreation Services’ Instagram TV. Video exercises have been modified to do inside the home or out in the backyard, and include the following classes: yoga, Zumba, Pilates, belly dancing, boot camp, and barre/chair exercises.
  • Stretching, nutrition tips and healthy-eating recipes from Vaughan Fitness instructors
  • Learning first aid basics from certified Vaughan lifeguards
