Top five items that can’t go in the blue box

Blue box, green bin or garbage – which one to choose? Sometimes it’s hard to know where to dispose of your waste materials. That’s why the City of Vaughan is giving you a refresher on what goes where, specifically for items commonly sorted incorrectly in the blue box:

  1. Coffee cups – coffee cups are not recyclable in York Region. They have a wax coating that harms the recycling process; therefore, they belong in the garbage.

  2. Styrofoam™ – all Styrofoam™, including packing peanuts, belongs in the garbage – it cannot be recycled in York Region.

  3. Plastic cutlery – while many plastics are recyclable in York Region, not all are. Try to reuse plastic cutlery for another purpose or place it in the garbage.

  4. Plastic bags – plastic bags are not recyclable in York Region, so they must be disposed of in the garbage.

  5. Batteries – batteries are hazardous if tossed in the blue box or garbage. Take them to a York Region waste depot for safe disposal.

What goes where?

Do you have other items to dispose of but aren’t sure where they belong? Check by using the City’s online ‘What Goes Where?’ sorting tool. You can also download the Recycle Coach app through the Apple App Store or Google Play to confirm where waste items belong. The app provides waste-less tips and a personalized collection schedule with optional alerts on what to put to the curb each week.
