Mayor Steven Del Duca issued the following statement at the Committee of the Whole (2) Meeting on March 8, 2023:

“Today the City of Vaughan recognizes the one-month anniversary of the devastating earthquakes that struck Türkiye and Syria on Monday, Feb. 6. The destruction is truly heartbreaking. Tens of thousands were killed, and more than one point five million were made homeless.

“Over the past month, I’ve spoken to members of our community who expressed a strong desire to support relief efforts in any way they can – one such local organization is Humanity First, whose dedicated workers are helping with relief and recovery efforts.

“The Canadian Red Cross is appealing for donations to provide humanitarian assistance to the people impacted by the earthquakes. In February, the federal government matched Canadians’ donations to the Red Cross in the amount of $10 million, but there is an urgent need for the recovery efforts to continue. Residents can donate at redcross.ca.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Türkiye and Syria. In times of crisis, there is far more that unites us than divides us. Whether it’s the person next door, or a family far away, residents of Vaughan stand ready to help.”
