Put your household waste where it belongs!

Let’s work together to keep Vaughan’s parks and public spaces garbage-free

Everyone knows throwing your household garbage on public and private property – such as parks and trails – is wrong, but did you know it’s also illegal under the Dumping By-law 103-2020 (PDF)?

This is called illegal dumping, and it comes with a hefty fine. It’s also a violation of the By-law to not keep your property clear of litter, waste and debris; failure to do so may come with a notice to clean up your property and/or receive a $500 fine for each offence. Failure to comply with a notice is also a chargeable offence and may result in the City removing the waste and debris at your expense.

Fines aside, illegal dumping has a negative impact on the health, safety and well-being of the community and the environment. It’s also dangerous for pets and wildlife as they may eat or be injured by discarded items.

Keeping the community safe and clean is everyone’s responsibility – let’s work together to reduce litter and report illegal dumping!

Examples of illegal dumping include:

  • items such as furniture, bags of household waste or construction materials left at the side of the roadway, or on private or public property.
  • placing household waste in or beside a City park garbage bin.

If you see someone illegally dumping or notice an area where illegal dumping has occurred, report it to Service Vaughan at 905-832-2281 or service@vaughan.ca.

We can all make a positive difference by following these tips:

  • Put waste in its place: while outside, place your waste in the nearest garbage, blue box or green bin. Be sure to use the right one!
  • Bag it and bin it: when walking outside with your pets, clean up after them and use the waste bins provided. If the bins are full, take your garbage and pet waste home. It belongs in the green bin at home or waste bins out in the community. As a reminder, you must pick up after your pet. The fine for failing to do so is $200. To report pet waste on public property, contact the City at 905-832-2281 or service@vaughan.ca.

Take advantage of Double-Up Days

If you have extra garbage, we have good news! You can participate in the City’s Double-Up Days – back during the weeks of June 13 or June 20, depending on your scheduled collection day. Instead of a three-item garbage limit, you can place up to six items at the curb on those dates with no paid garbage tags required. Visit vaughan.ca/WasteCalendar to view your 2023 blue or yellow zone collection schedule.
