Everything You Need to Know About Waste Collection, Leaf and Yard Waste, Debris and More
If Wednesday’s storm left you with extra garbage, fallen branches, leaf and yard waste or damaged household items, the City of Vaughan is here to help.
Waste collection
Regular waste collection is on track. Additional garbage and leaf and yard waste collection will be available on Saturday Sept. 5 and Monday, Sept. 7. If you have large quantities of storm-related waste that require collection, please contact Service Vaughan at 905-832-2281 or service@vaughan.ca to schedule a pickup on those days. Trucks will also visit areas that were more severely impacted by the storm.
The City is adding two extra weeks of Double-Up Days this month. This means you can place up to six garbage items curbside on your scheduled collection day, and no paid garbage tags are required during the weeks of Sept. 8 and Sept. 22 if you live in a blue zone or Sept. 15 and Sept. 29 if you live in a yellow zone.
Leaf and yard waste
The City will collect all properly prepared leaf and yard waste set out for collection as residents continue storm cleanup efforts. Please follow these guidelines:
Branches must be tied with string (no wire) in secure bundles no larger than 1.5 metres (five feet) long and 0.6 metres (two feet) in diameter. For larger branches, contact Service Vaughan at 905-832-2281 or service@vaughan.ca.
Leaf and yard waste must be placed curbside in Kraft paper bags or open-top rigid containers with handles, up to 121 litres (32 gallons), clearly marked “Leaf and Yard Waste.” Plastic bags are not permitted.
Flood-damaged household items
Have flood-damaged household items or storm-related debris that can't be collected curbside? Bring them to a York Region waste depot. Building materials damaged by flooding or water damage cannot be placed at the curb and must be taken to a York Region waste depot. This includes asphalt shingles, drywall, gutters, hardwood flooring, large lumber and tiles. For more information, visit york.ca/WasteDepots.
To dispose of broken glass, place all shards in a cardboard box marked “BROKEN GLASS” and set it out with your regular garbage collection. Never place broken glass or mirrors in a garbage bag.

Damaged or broken bins
If your City-branded green bin was broken or damaged from the storm, you can sign up online through Service Vaughan to exchange it for a new one, free of charge. The City of Vaughan logo must appear on the bin to be eligible for a free exchange.
