This week, the City of Vaughan celebrated another major milestone in the development of North Maple Regional Park with the groundbreaking of a new Family Recreation Area that will serve as a hub of recreation and activity for generations to come.

Mayor Steven Del Duca, Members of Council and other dignitaries took part in a special ceremony there to mark the start of construction of this $26-million project.

The Family Recreation Area will span over 15 acres within the 900-acre North Maple Regional Park, and will feature nature playgrounds, waterplay, a winter skate trail, a pondside boardwalk and accessible pathways, a major picnic pavilion, flower gardens, a parking lot and a pavilion with washrooms.

The development of NMRP is a key priority for Vaughan. The site has rich history, once serving as the third-largest landfill in North America. Vaughan CARES, a group of residents, played a key role in closing the landfill in 2002. Since then, the City has worked to transform the area into parkland guided by the principles of Restore, Engage and Play. NMRP is being developed as a signature destination for Vaughan and beyond.
