Storm Response Continues Across Vaughan

Update as of Thursday, Sept. 3 at 10 a.m.

The City of Vaughan continues to respond to significant impacts from Wednesday's severe thunderstorm, with crews working around the clock to address flooding, water ponding, downed trees and branches, and other storm-related issues across the community.

Here’s what you need to know – 

• All City of Vaughan facilities are open today as usual. 
• Downed tree and branch cleanup continues.
  • Forestry crews worked throughout the night and will continue today responding to downed trees and branches on roads and parks on a priority basis. 
  • To report a downed tree on public property, call Service Vaughan at 905-832-2281 or email service@vaughan.ca.
  • Downed trees on private property are the responsibility of the homeowner. You can reach out to a tree removal service for assistance.
• Avoid the following areas due to flood cleanup or repairs underway.  
  • Huntington Road and Trade Valley Drive – closed until further notice for a sinkhole repair 
  • Highway 7 – local traffic is permitted to enter Highway 7 from the eastern point at Keele Street. A full road closure remains in effect along Highway 7 between North Rivermede Road and Centre Street.
  • Huntington Road, north of Rutherford Road – staff are investigating a report of water over the roadway and a potential culvert collapse.
• If your waste collection was missed yesterday, please leave your bins at the curb today. Trucks will return to missed areas as soon as possible. Thursday’s waste collection should not be impacted by the storm. To report a missed blue box collection in Vaughan, contact Miller Waste Systems directly at 1-855-752-3762 or email area10@millerwaste.ca.
• The City has closed pathways at Jersey Creek Park, Veterans Park, Glen Shields Park, Nort Johnson District Park, Marita Payne Park and the East Don Open Space due to flooding and downed trees.
• Alectra is reporting some power outages in Vaughan. To report a power outage, hazard, electrical emergency or damage to Alectra equipment: Call 1-833-253-2872 (option 1), submit a form online, or use webchat at AlectraUtilities.com/Report-Outage.
• All City sports fields are closed until further notice. Visit the Sports Field Hotline webpage for updates or sign up for alerts.

The City will provide another update on its storm response later today.

Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service offers a number of tips on their website for dealing with storms and other emergency situations. As a reminder, do not attempt to drive through any flooded roadways. Water height can be deceptive and make road passage dangerous.
