North Maple Regional Park Master Plan sets vision for 900-acre park

The North Maple Regional Park (NMRP) Master Plan marks a major milestone in one of Canada’s most ambitious environmental transformations – turning 900 acres (364 hectares) of complex land, including one of North America’s largest landfill sites, into a destination for nature, recreation and community connection.

The NMRP Master Plan (PDF) sets a bold, long-term vision for how the site will evolve into a destination of national significance over the next 25 years. 

Guided by three core principles – Restore, Engage and Play – the plan focuses on restoring natural systems, celebrating culture, promoting active living and strengthening community connections. The future of NMRP is bright, with plans for picnic areas, conservatory gardens, pavilions, boardwalks, interpretive trails and so much more.

Already larger than Toronto’s High Park and comparable in scale to New York’s Central Park, NMRP holds a unique place in the region. Situated on the Oak Ridges Moraine at the headwaters of the Don River, the park reflects a layered history – spanning Indigenous presence, agricultural roots, industrial use, landfill operations and, ultimately, a powerful story of community-led advocacy that helped secure its closure and renewal. 

As it continues to take shape, the master plan will guide NMRP’s evolution into more than just a local green space – it represents a bold model for large-scale environmental restoration and a destination that will inspire generations to come.
