Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua played host to federal Environment Minister Peter Kent on Sunday, February 20 and took the Thornhill MP for a tour of Vaughan’s new City Hall.

“As Mayor, I have been reaching out to representatives at all levels of government and I knew the new Environment Minister would be very interested in touring our state-of-the-art City Hall,” said Mayor Bevilacqua. “The building supports the City’s commitment to environmental stewardship through the use of energy efficient features. It is an architectural marvel. With a large open atrium and walls of windows, it embodies transparency and openness and signifies a new era for our City.”

The new City Hall, which opened February 10, was designed by award-winning Canadian architectural firm Kuwabara Payne McKenna and Blumberg to achieve a gold certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). It will be one of largest public buildings in Canada to be recognized for its eco-friendly features.

The 280,000-square-foot building combines state-of-the-art technology with a whole-building approach to sustainability. The innovative project has already been recognized nationally with the 2004 Canadian Architect Award of Excellence and locally with a 2005 Vaughan Urban Design Award.

“Canadians understand that what we do today will determine the quality of life for the generations of tomorrow,” said the Honourable Peter Kent, M.P. “As Canada’s Minister of the Environment, I would like to applaud the City of Vaughan for doing its part by incorporating a number of green technologies into its City Hall. Through such sustainable design features as maximum exposure to natural light and views, passive solar shading, energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, natural ventilation and water efficient landscaping, this award-winning building is a shining example of Vaughan’s determination to ensure a cleaner, greener future.”
