For many Vaughan residents, RecAssist helps ease the cost of joining recreation programs. Staying active supports better physical health, stronger mental well-being and more connected communities. Recreation goes beyond simply being active. It’s a space where people meet others, learn new skills, build confidence and feel a sense of belonging. Still, for some individuals and families, affordability remains a barrier to getting involved.

That’s where the City of Vaughan’s recreation fee assistance program, RecAssist, plays an important role. Through reduced or subsidized fees, more residents of all ages and backgrounds can take part in programs and swim lessons. At its core, the approach focuses on equity – giving everyone a fair opportunity to experience the benefits of staying active, regardless of financial situation.

Why recreation matters

The positive impacts are clear. Across Canada, research consistently links participation in recreation and physical activity to improved physical health, lower stress and stronger mental well-being. Among children and youth, these experiences can support academic achievement, boost confidence and encourage social development. For adults and older adults, recreation contributes to maintaining mobility, independence and overall quality of life.

Outside of research findings, the benefits can be seen in everyday life. It might look like a child trying something new for the first time. It could be a newcomer forming lifelong connections. It can also be a family sharing time together in a way that feels both accessible and meaningful.

Powered by community support

Community generosity is what keeps the program going. Alongside donations, support also comes from residents who take part in affordable activities and special events such as June is Recreation and Parks Month, Family Day programming and Vaughan Fitness fundraising initiatives. Participation in these events helps generate funding for fee assistance, creating a shared cycle of giving that benefits the broader community. Getting involved, whether by donating or attending an event, is a simple way to make a difference and expand access to recreation.
