Traffic and Speed Management Study

The City of Vaughan is conducting a neighbourhood Traffic and Speed Management Study for the Athabasca area (community south of Kirby Road and west of Dufferin Street).

The study is aligned with the directions, programs and plans outlined in the City’s MoveSmart Mobility Management Strategy (MoveSmart) and Speed Limit Policy.

A critical component of the study is engaging residents in the Athabasca community for public input. Residents were invited to attend a second virtual Public Information Session via Zoom on Monday, June 20 at 7 p.m. to learn about and comment on proposed traffic solutions for the area. If you were unable to attend the live session, you can review the presentation slides (PDF).

Residents are also invited to complete an online survey to provide input on the proposed traffic solutions and their locations. The survey will remain open until Monday, July 11 8. A hardcopy of the survey was also mailed to residents in the Athabasca community.

About

Residents of the Athabasca community are concerned about speeding traffic on roads within the area and have requested traffic calming measures, traffic control measures and community road safety programs. Road safety and parking activity have also been identified as a community concern.

Traffic calming and control are measures the City can use to manage the speeds at which vehicles travel and encourage responsible driving through physical design features (e.g., speed bumps or humps) and/or passive measures (e.g. signage or pavement markings). These, and other options, will be explored through this Traffic and Speed Management Study.

At the June 22, 2021 Council meeting, Council directed staff to undertake a full neighbourhood traffic and speed management study for the Athabasca area (see map for study area). Any improvements recommended will be deemed a pilot project that could potentially benefit other subdivisions in the future.

Additionally, on March 3, the City hosted the first virtual Public Information Session where participants had the chance to view a presentation about the study, learn about the findings from the online public survey and the project’s next steps, as well as provide input. If you were unable to attend the live session, you can review the presentation slides (PDF).
