Sonia Meucci Liscio honoured posthumously with Ward 3 Civic Hero Award

Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Ward 3 City Councillor Rosanna DeFrancesca celebrated the life, commitment and enduring legacy of the late Sonia Meucci Liscio, by posthumously honouring her with the Ward 3 Civic Hero Award. The ceremony took place during a meeting of Council’s Committee of the Whole. Accepting on behalf of Ms. Liscio were her husband Rick and their children Alexandria, Marc and Victoria.

Ms. Liscio and her husband first moved to the Weston Downs neighbourhood in the Woodbridge community in 1984. Soon after arriving to Vaughan, Ms. Liscio immersed herself as a concerned citizen and tireless volunteer, committed to making a positive difference that would benefit her neighbours and budding family. Ms. Liscio believed in the importance of civic engagement and grassroots activism, which resulted in her being one of the original founding members of the Weston Downs Ratepayers’ Association (WDRA).

During her extensive tenure with the WDRA, Ms. Liscio served on the association’s executive as vice president. Ms. Liscio’s personal commitment to “do what is right,” was an inspiration to those she came in close contact with, and helped shape the overall mission and work undertaken by the WDRA and its membership. As a result of the local leadership demonstrated by individuals like Ms. Liscio, the WDRA earned a reputation of being a responsive neighbourhood group that actively put the best interests of the entire community first, by working closely with the development community, along with Vaughan Council and staff.

Beyond her commitments with the WDRA, Ms. Liscio dedicated her time and talents toward other worthy causes. Ms. Liscio passed away in July 2017 following a courageous battle with cancer.
