Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the Inclusion and Community Services Specialist (ICSS) to over see the specialized and one-on-one integration program and provide guidance/support to recreation staff and leisure buddy volunteers.

  2.  Assist with the supervision of Special Needs Program Instructors and Special Needs Program Assistants in delivering safe, engaging and creative programming.

  3. Assist and liaise with community agencies and partners supported by the supervisor.

  4. Provide behaviour management and physical assistance to all persons with disabilities in a recreational setting.

  5. Assist in the recruitment, training, scheduling, mentoring and overseeing of a large number of leisure buddy volunteers to support the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all municipal recreation program.

  6. Assist the ICSS to develop, implement and evaluate year-round recreational programs and camps to ensure the integration of participants with a disability into all program areas; fitness, aquatics, pre-school, children and youth.

  7.  Assist in the recruitment, training, scheduling, mentoring, and overseeing year-round all inclusion staff to ensure participants’ needs are accommodated within the city programs.

  8. Coordinate inclusion placements in all recreation programs.

  9. Assists individual child needs for inclusion and assists with INTAKE assessments.

  10. Have a good understanding of community resources and limitations as well as the socio-economic and geographical make-up of the community.

  11. Perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Qualifications and requirements

  1. College or university degree in a relevant discipline (CYW, BA, DSW) or Recreation related discipline.
  2. Knowledge and experience working with individuals with special needs and diverse population.
  3. Min 3 yearsexperience working directly with complex special needs participants and behavioural challenges.
  4. Awareness of the Quality Assurance Measures  MCSS, AODA, Human Rights Code.
  5. Min 2 years’ experience in a supervisory role.
  6. Current Non-Violent Crisis Prevention Certification (CPI / SMG) or equivalent qualification is an asset.
  7. High Five PHCD Certification.
  8. Current Standard First Aid with CPR certification.
  9. Vulnerable Sector Screening Results.
  10. Reliable transportation and valid G class driver’s license.
  11. Must be able to work weekend, evening hours as required.
  12. Excellent planning, organizational and time management skills.
  13. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans.
  14. Conflict resolution skills.
  15. Excellent computer skills in MS Office (Word, Excel and Outlook).
  16. Public Relations skills, excellent verbal and written communications skills with the ability to communicate with public and all levels of staff.
