Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and implement a specialized program for persons with disabilities in a safe and enjoyable manner.
  2. Provide support to parents and participants to help create an environment that will support individual participant’s needs, allowing them to develop skills and self-esteem alongside their peers.
  3. Develop program lesson plans in consultation with the Active Living Coordinator for Special Needs and Volunteers.
  4. Implement a safe, enjoyable, diverse and adapted program to enhance participant’s self-esteem and socialization.
  5. Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all participants and assist staff during work hours.
  6. Maintain ongoing and effective communication with participants, parents/care givers and all City of Vaughan Staff.
  7. Ensure attendance is taken accurately.
  8. Provide toileting, emotional support and behaviour management as needed.
  9. Maintain supply and equipment inventory.
  10. Attend all program relating trainings and meetings.
  11. Maintain a professional attitude and abide by City of Vaughan policies and procedures at all times.
  12. Encourage and foster in all participants the 5 Principles of Healthy Child Development as outlined by High Five: Quality at Play.

Qualifications and requirements

  1. College or University student currently enrolled in Social Work education, Recreation related discipline, or equivalent knowledge and experience; OR previous experience working with individuals with special needs.
  2. Standard First Aid/CPR-C certification.
  3. Valid Police Vulnerable Sector Check.
  4. Safe Management certification/Non-Violent Crisis Prevention certification. 
  5. Possess a valid driver’s licence and have access to a reliable vehicle.
