In addition to supporting the achievement of various corporate objectives and strategic initiatives, Legal Services also advises internal stakeholders on matters related to litigation, planning, real estate and development, procurement, labour and employment, by-law, construction, prosecution, corporate risk management and municipal law.

Service areas include:

  • Draft, review and negotiate contracts and documents with both public and private sector entities with respect to a wide range of strategic City initiatives.
  • Provide specific legal advice on operational matters to all internal City departments.
  • Commence and defend litigation on behalf of the City.
  • Represent the City before the Ontario Land Tribunal and associated negotiations.
  • Monitor and report on legislative changes.
  • Support Term of Council priorities by providing sophisticated legal and strategic advice to internal stakeholders.
  • Draft and review reports to Council in order to identify legal risk and options for mitigating such risks.

While Legal Services does not provide services to the public, it does provide direct legal support to City departments that liaise with residents and businesses.
