What is pickleball?
Pickleball is an emerging sport experiencing a popularity boom in Canada. Pickleball is a paddleball sport, combining elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It is played with a paddle and a wiffleball (a plastic ball with holes) on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net. It can also be played on a tennis court with line painting modifications. The sport can be played as doubles or singles and is enjoyed by all ages and skill levels.

To ensure fair play and maximize everyone’s time on the court, a four-on, four-off paddle rotation system is in place during drop-in pickleball play. Here’s how it works:
- After each game, all four players leave the court and place their paddles in either the “Winners” or “Runners Up” bucket, depending on the game’s outcome.
- New players add their paddles to the end of the line when they arrive.
- Staff on-site will rotate players in by pulling paddles in the order they were placed into the buckets, alternating between the two to keep games moving and court time fair for everyone.
This system aims to reduce court wait times and encourages friendly matchups between players of all levels. Proper footwear is encouraged, and friendly sportsmanship is expected. Whether you’re new to the sport or a seasoned regular, everyone is welcome.
Along with this system, here a few reminders to help ensure everyone has a positive experience on the courts:
- Play fair and rotate courteously: Our drop-in format means sharing court time so everyone gets a chance to play. Please be mindful of game rotations and make space for new players.
- Respect your fellow players: A little encouragement and good sportsmanship go a long way in keeping the game enjoyable for all skill levels.
- Communicate kindly: Friendly discussions are always welcome, but let’s keep the tone positive and respectful.
To keep our courts enjoyable for everyone, we ask all participants to follow facility guidelines and our Code of Conduct (PDF), which is posted in our community centres as a reminder of the shared expectations for a welcoming and respectful environment. If you have any concerns, our staff are always happy to assist. Let’s continue to grow our pickleball community in a way that reflects the spirit of the sport — inclusive, respectful and fun for all skill levels.

About Vaughan’s Pickleball Study
Pickleball continues to grow across Vaughan, and the City is expanding opportunities to play. Following the City’s Pickleball Study conducted in 2021–2022, which included extensive community feedback, new shared-use and dedicated pickleball courts have been introduced across the city, with more on the way. Using the findings, the City identified key sites to retrofit existing tennis courts for shared use, while planning for dedicated pickleball courts to meet increasing demand.

The findings from the Pickleball Study have informed the Tennis and Pickleball Strategy, which was endorsed by Council in March 2025, and will continue to shape how the City plans and delivers racquet sport facilities across Vaughan. Recommendations from the study were also integrated into the Community Spaces Plan (an update to the City’s 2018 Active Together Master Plan) which will guide the long-term development of parks, recreation and library facilities. The plan is expected to go before Council in January 2026.
