Responsibilities:

  1. Facilitate daily activities that meet individual and group needs on a day-to-day basis.
  2. In collaboration with supervisor and staff, develop and implement adaptive activities based on program curriculum to ensure that programming is fit to participant needs.
  3. Assist with daily operations of the Day Program, e.g., activity implementation, providing snacks and lunch, assisting with feeding and clean-up.
  4. Provide hands-on client care as required: e.g., toileting, basic personal care, and hygiene.  
  5. Ensure the safety and well-being of the participants by minimizing risks though behaviour management interventions.   
  6.  Ensure the Day Program environment is always safe for participants, staff, and volunteers.   
  7. Practice appropriate health safety techniques.     
  8. Collaborate with parents and participants to create an environment that supports individual needs, develop alternate skills and self-esteem alongside their peers in a secure environment.  
  9. Be actively involved with the participant in all activities throughout the day  
  10. Maintain a professional attitude and always abide by policies and procedures. 
  11. Attend and actively participate in training and staff meetings.    
  12. Ensure the positive interaction between the participant with special needs and other participants. 
  13. Assist the Day Program Facilitator in evaluation of program and participants on an ongoing basis.     
  14. Carry out any other duties as required.

Qualifications and requirements

  1. College or University student currently enrolled in Social Work education, Recreation related discipline, or Personal Support Worker (PSW) certificate or demonstrated knowledge of and experience in working with individuals with disabilities.
  2. Standard First Aid/CPR-C certification.
  3. Willing to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Screening from an accredited Police Service prior to employment. 
  4. Current Safe Management certification/Non-Violent Crisis Prevention certification.
  5. Knowledge to physically assist participants with personal care, maneuvering and mobility.
  6. Ability to swim.
  7. Knowledge of adaptive programming and problem-solving skills.
  8. Attendance at all training.
