The City of Vaughan is committed to the preservation, conservation, rehabilitation, restoration and management of heritage resources through Heritage Conservation Planning. Heritage resources can include properties, structures, buildings, districts and landscapes.
Heritage Conservation Planners provide expert advice to the Heritage Vaughan Committee and City Council on the retention, rehabilitation and protection of heritage resources along with their integration into new developments.
Where sites of historical significance have been identified by the City of Vaughan, Heritage Conservation Planners work with property owners to provide information, evaluate applications for alterations and demolition under the Ontario Heritage Act.
The City of Vaughan recommends that owners discuss any proposal to alter designated properties as early as possible to ensure a
smooth
process.
Vaughan preserves cultural heritage properties three ways:
1.
Individual Designation
under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act. These properties are formally recognized and protected by designation municipal by-laws specific to each address. Designation follows a process of identifying, evaluating and defining a property as per criteria set out in the Ontario Heritage Act.
2.
Heritage Conservation District (HCD) Designation
. If the property lies within a Heritage Conservation District, these properties are designated by municipal by-law and Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act. District designation enables municipalities to guide change in districts, through adoption of district plans with policies and guid
elines for conservation, protection and enhancement of each District’s historic character.
The City of Vaughan has four Heritage Conservation Districts :
Kleinburg‐Nashville
,
Maple,
Thornhill
and
Woodbridge
.
3.
Properties of Architectural and Historical Significance (LSHS).
Properties identified as having cultural heritage value are identified on the City of Vaughan's LSHS list. These properties are not designated but have protection against demolition under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act.
