Page Content
The holdings of the City of Vaughan Archives are both rich and diverse, and include government and non-government records. Each month, this page will showcase a variety of historic photographs, postcards, posters and other graphic material form the Archives. Images selected will depict a wide variety of subjects relating to the Vaughan community from 1860 to the present. Only a small selection of the hundreds of images that are available in the Archives are presented here, so viewers are encouraged to contact Archival Services staff if they would like to obtain a copy of an image (either electronic or paper).
On December 11, 1944, a massive snowstorm hit the City of Toronto and its surrounding areas. A total of 57 cm was recorded after two consecutive days of snowfall, with a staggering 48 cm falling the first day alone. All traffic and businesses were shut down and 21 people died as a result of the storm, 13 of which were from heart attacks caused by the overexertion of shoveling snow. Vaughan Township was also affected by the snowstorm. In this image, Alvin Baker stands on Dufferin Street, north of Langstaff, next to a wall of plowed snow.
