About the water meter upgrade program

The City of Vaughan is undergoing a water meter upgrade program to repair or replace more than 80,000 qualifying old analogue water meters to new digital meters to improve communication between homes and the City’s water infrastructure. All residents are required to change their water meter and there is no cost for the upgrade. All eligible properties will receive a letter in the mail from the City’s contractor, WAMCO Waterworks. Participation is mandatory under section four of the City’s  Water By-law 177-2016 (PDF).

What to do after receiving a notice letter

To arrange an appointment time, visit wamco.as.me to book through the City’s contractor, WAMCO Waterworks online. You may also call 1-833-926-2626 (toll free) to book via a live agent. The resident must be home at the time of the appointment to allow access to the water shutoff.

Appointments to have the water meter repaired or replaced must be scheduled by the date indicated on the letter.
The benefits of the water meter replacement program include:

  • The ability for the City to conduct remote water meter readings. No physical visits will be required to obtain water meter readings which will result in saved time and improved efficiency.
  • Improved water meter reading accuracy. If the resident's water meter was previously over-registering or under-registering, the new water meter will now measure the water usage accurately.
  • Ability to identify leaks and losses within the system before they become a larger issue.

Once an appointment is booked

After permission is granted by the property owner, the installer from WAMCO Waterworks will enter the property and will only touch the main water shutoff (inside) and existing water meter. The installer will replace the water meter with the new one and will take away the old water meter. This procedure will take less than 10 minutes to complete. Installers will then check to confirm the water meter’s remote is working properly and a meter reading can be read from outside the property.

Safety Protocols during COVID-19 for WAMCO installers

As with any other workplace in Ontario, WAMCO Waterworks installers are subject to a daily health screening process before heading to work. Installers will be wearing PPE when they enter homes. Residents are asked to please give  installers their space when they are performing the water meter upgrade. Should you have any questions, please contact Access Vaughan at 905-832-2281 or email accessvaughan@vaughan.ca.
