Watermain flushing and swabbing
Page Content
Watermain flushing and swabbing is performed by the City of Vaughan’s Environmental Services, Water Services. Certified water operators in order to ensure that distribution pipes are clean and safe and able to provide high quality drinking water to residents and businesses.

Flushing is performed by moving potable water through the pipes at high speeds and letting it out through fire hydrants until the water runs clear. Flushing removes scale and accumulated residue that has naturally built-up in the watermains over time. Watermain flushing is performed across the City as a routine maintenance activity and is also required when installing a new watermain or repairing a watermain break.

Prior to any watermain flushing or swabbing, the City will make every effort to notify affected residents and businesses in the area. During this time, we ask that every effort is made to not use the water. If discoloured water is encountered, run a cold water tap until the water runs clear (preferably a shower or laundry sink without screens). If discoloured water is still apparent, contact Access Vaughan at 905-832-2281.

Waterma

in cleaning and flushing: do's and don'ts!

  • Do not – Run any water in the residence/facility for any reason during the watermain cleaning and flushing. This could lead to debris entering and clogging the water meter leading to water pressure issues in the building.
  • Do not – Flush toilets or turn on any taps during the watermain cleaning and flushing.
  • Do – Run a cold water tap (preferably a laundry or bath tub tap with no screens) for approximately three to five minutes at the end of the day – each day that the flushing is scheduled for. This will clear any discoloured water left in the water line.
  • Do – Pre-fill containers in the event that water may be needed during the shut off period.
  • Do – Pre-fill a bathtub for sanitary flushing of toilets (to flush your toilet, pour a bucket of water into the bowl, this will allow manual flushing of the toilet)
  • Do – Turn the shut-off valve in your house to “off” at your meter to ensure no water is used by accidental flushing or turning on of taps.
  • Do – Put water softeners on “bypass” to prevent recycling of water during the cleaning process.

Frequently asked questions

How can I prepare before the watermain swabbing on my street begins?
Before watermain swabbing occurs on your street, it’s recommended to store water in a container in the fridge to use for cooking and drinking. You can also fill your bath tub with water for washing your hands or flushing toilets. Also, be sure to complete dishwashing, laundry and other activities that require water prior to the watermain swabbing activity.

Is my water shut off during this time?
No. Water is not shut off during this time, but we ask that you make every effort not to use the water.

Can I use my toilet during the time that the watermain is being cleaned?
Yes. You can use your toilet by pouring a pail of stored water into your toilet bowl to allow your toilet to manually flush.

Can I use the drain while the watermain is being cleaned?
Yes. You can use the drain during this time.

What will happen if I turn my tap on by accident?
If you accidentally turn on your tap during this time, you may experience discoloured water and run the risk of damaging your water meter with debris. Make every effort to avoid turning on the taps during this time. It’s recommended to turn off your water at the water meter inside your home to avoid accidental water use.
