Blue Box Recycling

Collections

Blue box recycling is collected once a week on your scheduled collection day.  

Collection times
Blue bin recycling should be placed at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before collection and no later than 7 a.m. on the day of collection. The time of collection can change at any time without notice.  
 
Container type
New! Large 121 litre (32 gallon) blue bins are now available for sale through Service Vaughan.
 
Acceptable containers 
  • hoose the hoose the right bins - blue only for recycling.

  • blue boxes purchased from the City of Vaughan

  • similar sized blue boxes purchased at retail stores, 53 to 121 litres (14-32 gallons), with no attached lids or wheels

Unacceptable containers 
  • cardboard boxes
  • garbage bags (any colour) and garbage containers (any colour) 
  • containers with attached or detachable lids 
  • wheeled containers and oversized containers
  • Used clothing or household items – these may be donated to a private organization of your choice or consider participating in the City’s Curbside Giveaway, during applicable months. 
Weight and size limits
  • The total weight of any one container and contents must not exceed 20.5 kilograms (45 pounds).
Placement of materials
  • Cardboard must be broken down, flattened and bundled to a maximum of 0.6 metres by 0.6 metres by 0.3 metres (maximum two feet by two feet by one foot), and placed beside the blue box.
  • Place collectible waste materials at the curb for collection (on or beside the driveway).
    Do not place collectible materials on the road, as it may pose a hazard to traffic.  
  • Keep waste materials separate from your neighbours.  
  • Ensure waste is properly set out in the winter months.
  • Do not overfill the contents of the blue box. Purchase additional boxes if needed
 
Weather-related tips
On windy days, items in the blue box can be blown from the curbside. Here are a few tips to secure items:
  • Place the blue box recycling out for collection in the morning, no later than 7 a.m. rather than the night before.
  • Place heavier items on top of lighter items.
  • Do not overfill the blue box. Purchase additional boxes, if needed.
  • Flatten small cardboard boxes, fold aluminum trays and flatten plastic bottles and beverage cartons to save space.
  • Bundle cardboard and newspapers
  • Take blue boxes in as soon as possible after collection to prevent the empty box from blowing away.
  • Write the home address on the blue box so that it is easier to return if blown away.
Reducing junk mail
To stop receiving unaddressed admail, either: 
  • Contact the sender directly and request that they remove your name and address from the mailing list.
  • Contact Canada Post and fill out a form to stop marketing mail.
