Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service (VFRS) is committed to maintaining current fire rescue techniques. The use of vacant buildings (acquired structures) gives firefighters the opportunity for realistic, hands-on rescue training.

What is an acquired structure?

An acquired structure is any vacant building scheduled for demolition or renovation that can be used for VFRS hands-on training.

Why does VFRS do this?

Hands-on training through acquired structures gives VFRS personnel the opportunity to enhance their firefighting skills in a safe and realistic environment.

What kind of training will be done?

VFRS will only use the structure for one of two types of agreed upon training:

  • Non-destructive training (no damage to structure)
  • Destructive training (damage to walls, ceilings, roof and floors)

Are there any liabilities?

VFRS will not hold any person associated with the property responsible for any injuries that may occur to firefighting personnel. When the training is complete, VFRS will ensure the structure is secure and safe.

Will participating in the program delay demolition or renovation?

The intention is to not disrupt the project in any way. VFRS can hold training and ensure the site is safe within a few days.
