Public transit is a sustainable transportation mode, and includes buses, streetcars, subways and trains. Three transit systems are currently available in Vaughan:

  1. York Region Transit (YRT)/Viva – YRT/Viva offers local bus and rapid transit services in Vaughan and York Region. VivaNext – York Region’s plan for the next generation of rapid transit – is planned for Highway 7 and scheduled to be completed in phases between 2015-2020. In addition, Mobility Plus provides door-to-door shared-ride accessible public transit service for people with disabilities.
  2. Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) – TTC bus routes serve many parts of Vaughan. The Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension Project  will provide an 8.6km extension of the existing TTC subway from Downsview Station to the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre. Subway service is expected to begin in 2017.
  3. GO Transit – GO Transit is the regional public transit service for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. GO Transit offers train services between Union Station, Rutherford Road Station and Maple Station in Vaughan. Go Transit also has bus services serving Kleinburg, Woodbridge, Highway 400 at Major Mackenzie, and Canada’s Wonderland.

Tax Credit for Public Transit Passes
The Government of Canada offers a federal income tax credit to help cover the cost of public transit, and encourage greater use of public transit. The tax credit is for weekly or longer duration public transit passes and electronic payment cards. The amount claimed is deducted from the amount of tax owed for that year. Remember to keep all receipts as taxpayers are expected to provide appropriate supporting documentation for claims.
