Spring cleaning continues!

Seasonal maintenance operations are underway with litter collection, tree maintenance, pothole repairs and more

Spring has arrived in Vaughan – and the May flowers are in bloom. To help keep the city safe, clean and beautiful for your enjoyment all season, our dedicated Public Works crews have been hard at work with their annual spring maintenance efforts.

Here’s what the team has been up to:

  • Litter cleanup continues in our parks, paths, trails, sidewalks, boulevards and garden beds across the city. Public Works crews have collected 1,820 bags of litter so far this year.

  • Street sweeping is underway to keep unwanted materials from flowing into stormwater drains, and prevent pollution in our waterways, sewer backups and road flooding. The City performs street sweeping across approximately 7,000 kilometres of roads annually.

  • Forestry operations are ongoing, with 791 pruning requests, 255 removal requests and 522 service requests completed so far. Any hazards that need to be removed, such as fallen branches, are responded to in a priority sequence.

  • Road maintenance continues, with more than 277 potholes repaired already this year.

  • Grass cutting takes place on a two-week rotation across more than 200 parks and more than 800 hectares of open spaces, such as boulevards and sports fields.

  • Gardens and landscaped areas are pruned, mulched, weeded, watered and cleaned up throughout the season.

  • Catch basin cleaning began this month, with crews removing sediment, debris and pollutants. The City’s residential catch basins are cleaned on a three-year rotation and those in industrial areas are cleaned annually.

  • Stormwater management pond maintenance is underway. Three rounds of litter cleanup and grass cutting will happen across more than 160 stormwater ponds in the community until October.

  • Pavement marking begins soon and continues until November, depending on the weather. The City implements new pavement markings and refreshes existing ones annually, including centrelines, lane lines, crosswalks, stop bars and directional arrows.
