Recent news: Fitness centres and pools to reopen on March 8

Current status: Red-Control

York Region is currently in the Red-Control zone and the following public health safety measures are applicable to gatherings, workplaces requirements and face coverings.

Service updates and adjustments
Most facilities – including Vaughan City Hall and the Joint Operations Centre – remain closed until June 2021 at the earliest. For up-to-date City news on COVID-19, subscribe to the City Update eNewsletter and read the City's various Media Releases. Many services have been updated or adjusted in response to COVID-19:

Gathering limits:

  • Trips outside of the home should only be for essential reasons (work, school, groceries/pharmacy, health care, assisting vulnerable individuals or exercise and physical activity)
  • Families should not visit any other household or allow visitors in their homes; people who live alone can gather with one household
  • Everyone should stay home as much as possible and avoid social gatherings
  • Physical distancing to be maintained for all events and gatherings with individuals outside of one’s household
  • Individuals should work remotely, whenever possible
  • Workplaces are required to screen workers and visitors entering the work environment

Stores and shopping:

  • Face coverings are required in all indoor public spaces (with limited exemptions) including indoor workplaces, and outdoors when physical distancing cannot be maintained or if wearing one is required
  • Worker protections, such as personal protective equipment (PPE) including masks and eye protection, are required where patrons without face coverings are within two metres of workers (indoors and in the absence of a Plexiglas or some other impermeable barrier)
  • Non-essential travel from areas of high transmission to areas of low transmission should be avoided

Businesses:

  • Businesses that are open must not permit patrons to line-up or congregate inside or outside unless they are maintaining two metres of physical distance
  • All businesses or facilities must limit capacity so that every member of the public is able to maintain two metres of physical distancing from every other person; some businesses may have additional capacity restrictions
  • Businesses or places that are open must ensure that equipment, washrooms, locker rooms, change rooms and showers that are accessible to the public are cleaned and disinfected as frequently as is necessary to maintain a sanitary condition
  • Stores must post capacity limits publicly and must have passive screening for patrons in place (e.x. posting signs outside the store front about not entering if you have COVID-19 symptoms); this does not apply to indoor malls, which are required to actively screen customers before entrance
  • All businesses must have a safety plan
  • Specific businesses should visit york.ca/COVID19 for additional information.

The City continues to work with all levels of government to implement precautionary measures to ensure public safety in response to COVID-19. To keep the community safe and help curb the spread of COVID-19, York Region is asking residents to:

  • Stay home as much as possible and limit close contact to those in your immediate household
  • Practice physical distancing with anyone outside of your household by staying two metres away from everyone else
  • Wash your hands thoroughly and often
  • Practice respiratory etiquette
  • Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands
  • Wear a face mask or covering when inside public places and outdoors, when physical distancing cannot be maintained
  • Clean high-touch surfaces often
  • Download the COVID-Alert app
Those who feel unwell and believe they have symptoms related to COVID-19 should contact York Region Public Health or Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000.
