Joe Tomei - Ward 3 Civic Hero Award, 2008
Joe Tomei, Chief of Police for the Town of Orangeville and long-term Vaughan resident, was given the Ward 3 Civic Hero Award for his volunteerism and commitment to serving the community.
Chief Tomei has lived in Vaughan for more than 20 years, and has been active in the community as a member of the Safe City Committee and as a Scout and Cub leader with the 2nd Woodbridge Scouts. He also received two Volunteer Recognition Awards from the City of Vaughan for his work with the Scouts and Safe City Committee.
Chief Tomei has more than 35 years of experience with the Toronto Police Service, including as a Staff Inspector, Unit Commander of the Organized Crime Unit, Major Projects, Major Crime Task Force, Biker Enforcement Unit, Firearm Enforcement Unit and Proceeds of Crime and Illegal Gambling. He became Chief of Police for Orangeville in 2007.
He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and has a degree in Justice Studies from the University of Guelph, a certificate in Law Enforcement and Administration from the University of Toronto, and certificate in Criminal Justice from the University of Virginia. He is also the recipient of the Canadian Police Exemplary Service Medal and 30-Year Bar for meritorious service to policing.
