Ward 5 Civic Hero Award presented to Jenna Zaracoff and Zachary Winkler

Jenna Zaracoff and Zachary Winkler are young philanthropists who have worked hard to raise thousands of dollars for charity. The two Grade 8 students realized the power of giving back and established community events to support personal causes. In recognition of their efforts, a Civic Hero Award for Ward 5 was presented to the each of them by Vaughan Council last evening.

Zaracoff, a longtime Thornhill resident, started a lemonade stand when she was eight years old to raise money for Lymphoma Canada. The annual event is held in memory of her father who died at the age of 45 from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Winkler began his ‘Do Something Sweet’ event at the age of six after learning about a young girl with a brain tumour. He decided to do something to help all sick children, and started supporting the Hospital for Sick Children. His annual event has raised more than $50,000 in eight years.
