Soccer players and fans joined Mayor Bevilacqua and Members of Council on Wednesday to kick off the official opening of Sonoma Heights Community Park Artificial Turf Soccer Field.

“Soccer is extremely popular in Vaughan and for those of us who enjoy the beautiful game, this new field is a great addition to our City,” said Mayor Bevilacqua. “As a former player with the National Soccer League, I know the benefits of well-equipped training and playing facilities and how they help to produce elite soccer players. Vaughan is well-known in the international soccer community and more than 20,000 Vaughan youth and adults are registered in soccer programs throughout the year.”

Located at 100 Sunset Ridge, the field measures 110 by 68 metres and is built to FIFA 1 Star standards for a senior artificial turf soccer field. If features bleacher seating which can accommodate up to 140 people, a sports lighting system, scoreboard, players benches, asphalt walkway and chain-link fencing.
The Kleinburg Nobleton Soccer Club contributed $125,000 to the construction of the field.

“With a high level of participation in local soccer programs and success in providing facilities for provincial and national soccer organizations, Vaughan is the soccer capital of Canada,” said Ward 2 Councillor Tony Carella. “After all, Vaughan is home to the Vaughan Soccer Campus which includes The Soccer Centre, the Canadian Soccer Association, the Ontario Soccer Association and the Soccer Hall of Fame and Museum. Each year the campus hosts more than 400,000 visitors and 1,000 teams.”
